Writing, editing and proofreading

Writing

When you know what you want to say, but just can’t get the words down on paper (or a screen), that’s where a professional writer comes in. Whether you’re looking for copy to increase sales on your website, creating a brochure to increase attendance at a community event, or struggling to write interesting social media posts, we can find the words that work for you and your business or organisation.

Editing and proofreading

If you’ve written the words but they’re just not quite right, we can help. We primarily work in non-fiction (with particular expertise in military/defence work), but also take on short stories and longer-format fiction in the genres of romance, fantasy and what is generally referred to as ‘chick lit’.

A structural edit (sometimes called substantive editing or developmental editing) takes the entirety of your work and considers how it’s put together and how it tells your story. We examine whether everything contributes to the purpose of your work and what could or should be improved and we make suggestions for rewrites and revisions.

A copy edit looks at the detail of your work. We review and make corrections to improve accuracy, readability, and fitness for purpose, and to ensure that it is free of errors, omissions, inconsistencies, and repetition.

Proofreading is the most detailed of all. We examine your work purely for spelling and grammatical errors. We can either make changes on-screen, or mark them up on paper using traditional proofreading marks.

We use the Macquarie Dictionary and Style Manual for authors, editors and printers (6th ed.) as standard. Please advise us if you require a different standard applied to your work.
